Meilisearch Search

Meilisearch is a search engine from Meili, a French company in Paris. Laravel Scout talks to it out of the box. Brewless does not set it up; this is how it fits.

What Brewless does

The key in your Secret Manager

brewless env:push writes MEILISEARCH_KEY into your own Secret Manager. Brewless keeps the name and a checksum, never the value.

Indexing on the queue

With SCOUT_QUEUE on, Scout indexes from the queue. The worker container works it, called by the queue or by a trigger, without a process that keeps running.

Plain variables in the file

The host and the driver are no secrets: they go under variables in brewless.yml.

What you do

  1. Make a project in Meilisearch Cloud in a European region, or run Meilisearch on a server of your own.
  2. Add laravel/scout and meilisearch/meilisearch-php to your application.
  3. Put the host and driver under variables, and push MEILISEARCH_KEY with brewless env:push.

In your project

environments:
  production:
    variables:
      SCOUT_DRIVER: meilisearch
      SCOUT_QUEUE: "true"
      MEILISEARCH_HOST: https://ms-….fra.meilisearch.io

Questions

Where does Meilisearch Cloud keep my data?
In the region you choose for the project. Its European regions are Frankfurt and Paris, which run on infrastructure of Amazon Web Services. Meilisearch itself is open source, so you can also run it on a server of your own.
Can Brewless run Meilisearch for me?
No. A search engine needs a disk that lasts, and serverless containers have none. Use Meilisearch Cloud or a server of your own.
